The Requirement

Tradeprint’s recently installed large-format printers needed to receive substantial files as part of the printing process. The existing Cat5e network connections struggled to support this requirement, with file transfers taking about 45 minutes.

This created a production bottleneck. The requirement was to improve connectivity to the printers while keeping the facility operational during the work.

Working around a live printing environment

Much of the existing cable containment and the required routing were at height, so access needed careful planning.

With staff working and large printing machines operating, DNA had to plan how engineers and access equipment could move safely around the facility. The team planned cable routes, work areas, and access arrangements to minimise disruption to day-to-day production.

The solution

DNA installed dedicated Cat6A structured cabling connections for the large-format printers, upgrading the equipment's network infrastructure.

The work included routing and terminating the new cabling, identifying and labelling each connection, and testing the completed installation.

The focus was on addressing the specific requirement: providing network connections better suited to the large files being transferred to the printers, with the installation properly organised and checked before handover.

THE OUTCOME

A practical improvement to the printing process.

Around 40 minutes saved per transfer.

After the upgrade, files that previously took about 45 minutes to transfer now transfer in about 5 minutes, a saving of about 40 minutes per transfer.

The improvement reduced the bottleneck affecting the printing process. After the successful printer upgrade, Tradeprint extended the scope to include upgrading the cabling serving the site’s wireless access points.
